Project Approach
The Boulders Access Trailhead building is sited at the edge of the forest where the trail begins. The building is seen as a long and narrow wood structure on masonry piers sitting gently on the land. A breezeway splits the linear form to provide free restroom access to one side and securable public and office spaces on the other. Adoption of an 8’ structural module provides intimacy of scale and detail and an inherent rhythm to the structure as it steps down the hillside. The masonry clad restroom block is at grade and the high end lifts up in a small deck for staff and Rangers. The site is developed to provide parking for 70 cars with access to a future site for a maintenance building.
