Project Approach
The warehouse structure was programmed for offices, support, lab, inventory storage, and product assembly. The office provides an open work area for teams that are engaged in sales or service. Private offices with partial glass partitions border two sides of the open work area. Included are 2 conference rooms and a training room for in house and client trainees. The office and conference environment is up beat and modern in design. The bowstring roof trusses, steel column structure, and in some areas the wood roof, are exposed. Aligned with the bottom of the trusses are floating white ceiling panels that also serve as light reflectors. The light fixtures are conventional, economical factory fluorescent lights that have been inverted and suspended to provide indirect up-lighting. Other ceiling elements such as HVAC ducts, data trays and sprinkler lines are organized in concert with the ceiling panels. The wall system for the private offices and conference spaces is made of conventional wallboard, insulating polycarbonate panels and plate glass used in a modular design to create a functional wall system. Reveal detailing of the partitions and separation of planes creates a Mondrian-like panelization for employment of a stimulating but muted color palette and color separation. Thus a special space with identity, purpose and function is created with the use of conventional materials, and on a stringent budget. The break room, restrooms and lab are finished at the same level as the offices, whereas the assembly area and paint booths are purely functional. Exterior improvements are minimal: a new ramp, new windows, cleaning of brick, new pavement for parking and a driveway, security gates and a new steel canopy and signage. The 40 employees drive and park on site and in rented spaces and some travel by light rail.
